TEN: THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE
In crafting this symbol, I have once again drawn from the reconstruction proposed by Éliphas Lévi, who offered several variations. It is permissible, as I've suggested, to incorporate Egyptian symbolism for our purposes, without implying a theory of origin. In this depiction, I have chosen to portray Typhon in his serpent form. While the symbolism is not solely Egyptian, elements from Ezekiel's vision, such as the four Living Creatures, occupy the corners of the card, aligning with Lévi's interpretation.
According to the French occultist and reflected in the design itself, the symbol represents the perpetual motion of the fluidic universe and the constant flux of human life, with the Sphinx embodying equilibrium. The inscription of "Taro" as "Rota" on the wheel, along with the letters of the Divine Name, signifies the presence of Providence throughout. Similarly, the four Living Creatures exemplify this divine intention externally.
Occasionally, the sphinx is depicted resting on a pedestal above, which compromises the symbolism by undermining the essential concept of stability amidst movement.
Beneath the surface of the symbol lies the rejection of chance and the fatalistic implications thereof. It's worth noting that, from Lévi's time onward, occult interpretations of this card have often been criticized, even within occult circles, for their simplistic nature. It has been ascribed various meanings, such as principle, fertility, honorable masculinity, and authoritative rule, among others. However, even the superficial insights gained from common fortune-telling surpass these interpretations in their depth and relevance.
