TAROT - THE ARCHETYPE OF THE HERMIT AND ITS SYMBOLISM WITHIN TAROT

NINE: THE HERMIT

The Hermit (tarot card) - Wikipedia

The departure from conventional depictions in this card lies solely in the positioning of the lamp, which is not partially concealed by the bearer's mantle. Instead, the figure embodies the concept of the Ancient of Days merged with the Light of the World. A star shines within the lantern, symbolizing illumination. Described as a card of attainment, the figure stands atop an elevation, holding up the beacon, suggesting that "where I am, you also may be."

Contrary to some interpretations, the Hermit is not merely a wise seeker of truth and justice, nor is he solely an exemplar of experience. His beacon signifies the invitation for others to follow his path.

The card is often misconstrued when associated with the notion of occult isolation, as a means of protecting personal magnetism from contamination. This interpretation, attributed to Éliphas Lévi, is considered frivolous. In true Martinism, the term "Philosophe inconnu" held a different significance, not referring to the concealment of Mysteries, but rather to the understanding that Divine Mysteries safeguard themselves from the unprepared.
