TAROT - THE ARCHETYPE OF THE HIEROPHANT AND ITS SYMBOLISM WITHIN TAROT

CARD FIVE: THE HIEROPHANT

The Hierophant - Wikipedia

Seated between two pillars, the Hierophant wears the triple crown and holds a scepter ending in a triple cross in his left hand, while his right hand makes the ecclesiastical sign of esotericism, symbolizing the distinction between the revealed and concealed aspects of doctrine. Notably, the High Priestess remains without gesture. At his feet lie crossed keys, and two ministers kneel before him in priestly attire. Although commonly referred to as the Pope, this title is a specific application of his broader symbolic role.

He represents the authority of external religion, contrasting with the High Priestess, who embodies esoteric wisdom. However, interpretations of this card have often been muddled. While he embodies orthodox doctrine and the outer path leading to it, he is not solely associated with occult knowledge.

Rather, he epitomizes the highest expression of theological doctrine, symbolizing righteousness and sacredness in visible form. As such, he serves as the conduit for worldly grace, leading humanity's salvation. He heads the recognized hierarchy, reflecting a greater cosmic order. Yet, there's a risk that he may forget the symbolic nature of his role and overstep his bounds. He is not philosophy, inspiration, or religion itself, but rather a mode of its expression, particularly from a theological perspective.
