TAROT - THE ARCHETYPE OF THE HANGED MAN AND ITS SYMBOLISM WITHIN TAROT

THE HANGED MAN

The Hanged Man (tarot card) - Wikipedia

The Hanged Man card depicts a figure suspended from a gallows forming a Tau cross, while the position of the legs creates a fylfot cross. Surrounding the figure is a halo-like nimbus, suggesting a sense of martyrdom. Several key points merit attention: first, the gallows tree bears living leaves, indicating vitality amidst sacrifice; second, the facial expression conveys deep trance rather than anguish; third, the overall imagery hints at life in suspension, emphasizing vitality over mortality. While the card holds profound significance, much of its meaning remains obscured.

It's noteworthy that even Éliphas Lévi, the originator of much Tarot symbolism, and subsequent editors struggled to grasp its full import. Various interpretations have labeled it erroneously as a card of martyrdom, prudence, the Great Work, or duty, yet these descriptions fall short of capturing its essence, bordering on vanity. From my perspective, the card symbolizes a profound connection between the Divine and the Universe, offering insights into the higher nature of existence.

Those who delve into the symbolism embedded within this card may glean hints of a transformative awakening and recognize the potential for a glorious resurrection following the sacred Mystery of Death.
