Adhika Masa, also known as Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas, holds a unique significance in the Hindu lunar calendar system. It is a supplemental month inserted occasionally to harmonize the lunar and solar calendars. The Hindu calendar follows both the movements of the Sun and the Moon. When the Sun and the Moon align in the same zodiac sign at specific intervals, it gives rise to the concept of Adhika Masa.
According to traditional Hindu scriptures such as the Vasishtha Siddhantha, Adhika Masa occurs roughly every 32 months, 16 days, and 8 ghadi, bridging the gap between the lunar and solar years. This additional month, which is the 13th month in the lunar calendar, helps maintain synchronization between the two calendar systems. It compensates for the discrepancy of approximately 11 days, 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 12 seconds that accumulates over time between the solar and lunar years.
The story behind Adhika Masa adds a mythical dimension to its significance. Legend has it that Adhika Masa was once shunned and insulted by other months for lacking a deity and auspicious ceremonies. Seeking refuge, Adhika Masa approached Lord Vishnu, who granted the month a boon, transforming it into the auspicious Purushottam Maas. In this blessed month, devotees are said to receive multiplied spiritual merits for their worship, charity, and observances.
Observing Adhika Masa is considered highly virtuous in Hindu tradition. Although regular festivals are not typically celebrated during this month, it is regarded as a time for intense spiritual practices such as fasting, charity, scriptural reading, and pilgrimage. Special rituals like giving donations of 33 puas (sweet wheat bread) and lighting lamps are observed during this period.
Temples often organize elaborate religious discourses and ceremonies lasting for several days, focusing on the teachings of scriptures like the Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran. The devout believe that performing virtuous deeds during Adhika Masa leads to spiritual growth and liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
In years when Adhika Masa occurs, it bears the name of the subsequent month. For example, in the year 2020, Adhika Maas overlapped with Ashwin month, leading to the designation of two Ashwin months. While the Adhika Ashwin month lasted from September 18th to October 16th, the regular Ashwin month began on October 17th.
Adhika Masa serves as a reminder of the intricate connection between celestial movements and human spirituality, offering devotees an opportunity for heightened devotion and self-reflection.
